The NMP1000 from QNAP, the first digital content player that's also a NAS server.
(Credit: Dong Ngo/CNET)LAS VEGAS--CES 2010 has come to an end, and unlike most of what happens in Las Vegas, there are quite a few things showgoers want to make sure they carry home. Here are a few that I personally am excited about in the networking and storage categories.
The Plug Computer 3.0 from Marvell.
(Credit: Marvell)First is the debut of USB 3.0 products. The technology was first announced at CES 2009, and at CES 2010 a few companies released their own products, including Seagate, LaCie, Buffalo, and Western Digital.
As there's no motherboard with built-in USB 3.0 controllers yet, all of the new USB 3.0 external hard drives come optional with a controller card. This will change soon as VIA also announced at CES the world's first integrated USB 3.0 controller. It's safe to expect other hardware vendors, such as Intel and AMD, to follow suit, and ... The SmartStor ZERO NAS server from Promise.
(Credit: Promise)LAS VEGAS--Network-attached storage servers have always been among the harder products to install and use. Most of them require at least some know-how of computers and networking setup. This might change, however, with what Promise has to offer.
The company released at CES the new SmartStor ZERO NS2600, which it claims is the first no-muss, no-fuss NAS server. According to Promise, all you need to do is plug the server in, power it on, and install the included software and the rest is taken care of. The software will map an open network share, allowing instant access for data backup and DLNA media sharing via digital media players, or other sources, for you.
Other than that, this is a two-bay NAS server that comes with either one or two hard drives included; it offers up to 4TB of storage. It's one of the first routers that support Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) upload functionality. This means, apart from streaming media stored on the server, you ... The LinkStation Duo from Buffalo at CES 2010.
(Credit: Dong Ngo/CNET)LAS VEGAS--Buffalo Technology announced Friday at CES a refresh of its popular LinkStation Duo NAS server, which is designed for the home or small business environments.
The new NAS server has a new, sleek look with two front access bays that allow for user to change and swap out hard drives. Buffalo makes it very easy for users, as the hard drives can be installed without any tools and don't require trays. Instead, all you have to do is just insert the drive into the bay and close the latch that's designed to hold it firmly in place.
The new Buffalo LinkStation Duo is DLNA-certified, allowing it to stream content to any DLNA-compatible media devices, such as a computer or a game console. Plus, it can also acts as an iTunes server to host music for the iTunes software
The top selling point of the the LinkStation Duo is the fact that it supports Apple Time Machine ... Read the full post at CNET's CES 2010 blog
The new My Book 3.0 external hard drive looks similar to other USB 2.0 external hard drives from Western Digital.
(Credit: Western Digital)Now that Seagate has taken care of laptop users with its BlackArmor PS110 USB 3.0 external hard drive kit, Western Digital has something along those lines for desktop users.
The hard drive maker announced Tuesday at CES 2010 its first USB 3.0 external hard drive upgrade kit for desktop computers. The kit includes the My Book 3.0 and a PCI express card that adds USB 3.0 capability to a computer.
The add-in card is necessary as most, if not all, existing computers don't yet have a built-in USB 3.0 controller. Without the card, you'd have to wait until computers motherboard are released that have a USB 3.0 controller, such as the controller that VIA launched yesterday.
Other than having USB 3.0, the My Book 3.0 is a standard external hard drive with a 1TB 3.5-inch SATA hard drive. According
