  • actually the leader in the open soure development for Mobile phones right now is Nokia with their new Maemo O.S ,funny how it's new yet has way more big name open source apps than Android
vlc ,firefox and a whole host of others not to menmtion the o.s comes pre-installed with a terminal app !
Maemo still needs some work but overall it's shaping up to be the best mobile o.s to date ! In reply to: "Apple ceding open-source app market to Google?"

  • agree completely ! the n900 is probably the best MID on the market
IMO the best part of the browser is the ability to use the volume buttons for zooming and the addons !
maemo really has the iphone beat on many fronts ,
multi-tasking, customisation , open development {it has both firefox and vlc something apple has prevented on the iphone} ,the iphone still has a lot apps that maemo lacks but overall the n900 is a superior device
and will only get better with time

the only thing missing right now is one handed usablity due to the lack of potrait mode !
once thats added i'll be replacing my iphone too ! In reply to: "iPhone, BlackBerry Storm offer contrast in browsers"

  • IMO chrome O.S should have been made into a app for Windows and OSX, rather than a whole new O.S
I agree with google that the browser doesnt cut it anymore, it was designed way back in the 80s
and using it to run web apps , visit websites, check rss feeds , email and social networking
    is cumbersome
which is why I use a combination of 10-20 differnet programs do get my internet realated work done.
With chrome o.s it would be possible to do everything with just one app and since everything is in the cloud I could use it anywhere on any machine making it ideal for people on the move

it's a great idea just the wrong implementation cause computers are more than the internet ! In reply to: "Week in review: Browser breakthroughs"

  • part of the reason may be becasue of how easy it is to get cracked apps for a Android device , just search for Android apk on google and you can probably find the app you looking for , this is problem with open source everyone wants stuff for free !
and besides most Andoid users I know don't generally download games from the market casue they have Snes, genesis and mame Emulators, which are 100x better than the games being made now ! In reply to: "Game developer cuts back on Android in favor of iPhone"

too bad it doesn't run Andoid 2.0 ! In reply to: "Samsung unveils Android-powered Galaxy Spica"

  • actually the iphone doesnt have widgets and doesnt allow any sort of 3rd party background processes, there's a app on the jaibroken store but thats about it , hopefully Apple adds it in iphone 4.0 , cause there really are extremely usefull , although they do drain the battery quite a bit ! • Symbian has always been designed for non-touch based phones
or stylus based phones like the UIQ platform
now all of a sudden adding Finger friendly touchscreen support isnt going to help anyone
which is why s60 based touch handsets recieve such poor reviews
the resistive screens don't help either !
even Nokia is moving away form symbian towards Maemo which will probably be the kiling blow to symbian !
in this age of the iPhones and Android phones the lack of finger friendly UI is costing symbian and windows mobile dearly In reply to: "Why is Google Android beating Symbian?"

  • actually the iphone isnt really priced higher than the competition
it's just that at the high end price points Apple is selling a lot more than the competition including Nokia
for example compared to N series phones like the N97 , the iPhone sells a lot more
and bear in mind that the iPhone is still locked to limited carrriers !
god only knows what would have a happened had apple worked with all carriers !
all this shows is that marketshare isnt really as importatant as everyone makes it sound ,
just like how Apple's notebook buisness is suppodesly worth more than Dells and Hps combined In reply to: "Apple overtakes Nokia in phone profits"
