But thats a very limited scope on development evolution. Since cellphone app development is at its infancy you have no idea what great stuff will come from open source development. But you do know that there has been great stuff developed in open source for desktops. Its relatively safe to assume the same will happen on the cellphone level and soon.
Would you rather wait until that day arrives when there are lots and lots of great open source apps while you are left standing wondering why you don't have them? One of the main reasons why iphone users are saying iphones are great is because of all the apps they have. If someone else has more apps and more quality apps wouldn't that make you go 'hmmmmmm'. There is no better way to get your company killed than sitting on your laurel and waiting to see what happens.
Epson printers used to be the only player in town. They sat there doing nothing and hp took over. IE did the same and allow other browsers to take over because they just sat around and waited.

I think the main issue is the fundamental mentality of apple's management. They do business a certain way and you can't argue with their success. For them to suddenly relinquish control requires a very different shift of doing business. And anyone who has worked in an environment of highly predictable and continuous quarterly profit knows, you can't take the risk of losing that business model. The technical crowd won't care and would prefer the long term outlook. But the shareholders and other stake holders care more about the short term hit on share prices.
If they are to embrace open source they will have to flush the top tier management who will not want to do it and bring in new blood. But thats a risk very few companies are willing to take until the writing is on the wall.

The film industry needs to learn how to make good movies instead of formula nonsense. Maybe that will fix the problem...nah they'll never do that. In reply to: "Box office sales outpace disc sales in 2009"

Well when you have to shell out $17 to watch a movie in 3D, not hard to see where the money is coming from. But the question is how long before the ooooooh factor of 3D wears out. In reply to: "Box office sales outpace disc sales in 2009"

Huh? I record video with my 3G and 3GS iphones all the time.
Even stream it *LIVE* to the internet via quik.com as I hold my Iphone.
Yeah but the video quality of iphone is not so great. The resolution is pathethic and it has limited codec support.
There is a huge benefit to browsing a page at 800x400 vs 420x280.

What does private APIs have anything to do with open source. Just because they have private APIs does not mean the OS is not open source or that the APIs are in some way preventing you from developing on it. I can choose any one of a dozen development tool on my desktop to write my app and compile it to work on android. Can't do that on a closed system.

Because according to you there can only be one phone with one design. Meanwhile most people like to have choices. This phone does not compete with Droid even when its available to verizon because the form factor is not the same. People who wants a keyboard will not want this particular phone. Not everyone wants the same design and form factor because most people are not drones enslaved into one design.

Well he did say he's on campus so he hasn't been out much in the real world dealing with real world issues. His young life is based on a micro environment so his basis of the world is limited to that environment alone. I'm sure we've all been there when we were in college as well. Yup. The iphone was obscenely expensive for a phone when it was launched and people bought it anyway because they had to. Its required. They'll do the same with the tablet. Doesn't matter what they plan to do with it or if they actually need it. They'll buy it so that they can be among the first one to have it on the train or cafe for everyone to see. So that maybe they can be accepted and deemed cool in their own minds. In reply to: "WSJ: Apple tablet shipping in March"

They're going to let everyone think its $1,000 or $800 over and over so that they can launch it for $699. That way everybody would think thats a great price since they've been trained to think its closer to $1K. Lemming advertising. In reply to: "WSJ: Apple tablet shipping in March"
