  • Why don't you believe that he actually cares about music and other musicians? Is the idea that someone who has made it big can still care about other people alien to you? An old roommate of mine is the drummer for a fairly successful punk band. Whenever he is in town he goes to as many small and local shows as possible to support upcoming bands. When it made sense he was also releasing small bands on his own label - usually losing money in the process - to help support them . Just because you "made it" doesn't mean you stop being who you were. In reply to: "Nirvana bassist defends Bono's antipiracy stance"

  • We aren't talking about the music industry making money but the artists. However, that being said if the music industry doesn't make money you'll see a lot less touring. What many people don't understand is that with many tours the upfront money to prepare for a tour and the continuing money to actually support a tour is paid for by the label. Without proper tour support it's much more difficult for the larger small and mid sized bands to actually get on the road for extended periods of time. • An artist that wants to be paid for their efforts is a sell out? Exactly how does that make sense? In reply to: "Nirvana bassist defends Bono's antipiracy stance"

  • Actually, he was arguing that Avatar is doing just fine *because* copyright protection encouraged investors to pony up the 300 million dollars it took to make. Without protection for content producers in place, goes his argument, there wouldn't be the required level of investment to produce things like Avatar because investors wouldn't be able to make their money back. When you take the time to actually read what was written the argument makes a lot of sense. The free model can support a good number of content producers up to a certain point. However, without having a viable method to control access to the content it becomes less likely that producers will make enough money to create more complicated, expensive, and expansive work.

Now I don't buy the argument fully but there is some merit to it. I don't believe that ISPs should be gatekeepers - they should be seen as neutral carriers. I do think people should get over the idea that music/movies/informations want to be free though. In reply to: "Nirvana bassist defends Bono's antipiracy stance"

  • So who here is spouting some sort of 'obscene' lib nonsense? Basically all the comments here expressing some sort of contrary position are either libertarian or strictly interpreting the constitution. In reply to: "Can full-body airport scanners harm you?"

  • Jsibelius,

You don't have to subject yourself to any sort of search or screening. You just don't get to fly. In reply to: "Can full-body airport scanners harm you?"
