My comments

  • Actually, AT&T doesn't even have 3G in most places. Fact is, I consider myself lucky to be able to make a phone call on my iPhone when I'm not in the city. In my office, I get "no service" half the time. My 3G light came on once (in the last year) while I was at a convention, so I know it could work if I lived in New York or LA. This exclusivity agreement is all about money. Apple went to Verizon first and Verizon said no to their price. Apple could make the CDMA iPhone happen in 30 days if they could reach a deal with Verizon. If they were ready to make a CDMA iPhone 2 years ago, they could still do it tomorrow if the contract was signed. In reply to: "Verizon iPhone rumors are just rumors"

  • All I want is for Charter Cable to quit giving my Magic Jack VOIP packets 2nd class service and then calling me twice a week to offer their competing service. I support regulating the service providers to make them stop this throttling practice. If we get some decency thrown in, I'll consider that icing on the cake! • Mark,
If Apple does a tablet, it will no doubt have a shiny screen. Right off the bat, that would make it an inferior reader, in my opinion. I have yet to see a tablet with a matte, anti-glare screen. In reply to: "Irex officially unveils new wireless e-book reader"

  • Update: It's working now. Nothing I tried on any of my Windows XP machines would revive my phone. Finally, I decided to try synching to a Mac. That worked, but the phone lost everything. I then synched it to my Windows machine (where all my music is), and now I'm pretty much back to normal. What a waste of my time! • Last night I ran the upgrade. It produced an error which completely disabled my phone. The phone now displays a graphic of a USB cable coming up from the bottom of the phone with an arrow pointing up to an iTunes logo. I tried connecting it to several different computers (at the suggestion of Apple), but they all come up with an error saying "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes. When I try to restore the phone, it just fails and takes me back to the same place I started. I took the phone to the local AT&T store and they said, "Oh yeah, we've seen several of these since last Friday. You'll have to call Apple, because the problem is with their software." So I called Apple, and the tech sounded like he knew nothing of this problem. He sent me to Article: HT1925, which suggests I uninstall"all traces of" iTunes, QuickTime, and other essential software components from my Windows XP PC. I really don't have time to devote an entire day to this problem. I just want my phone to come on! In reply to: "Major, minor iPhone 3.1 upgrade problems and how to fix them"

  • i-arman said, "My question is, has constant exposure to cellular phone radio waves been reliably demonstrated to give mice cancer? If not, then whatever studies are being run are fairly worthless."

Of course the main problem here has been designing cell phones the mice can hold comfortably against their little ears. Also, many mice resist talking on cell phones on a daily basis. :-) In reply to: "Are cell phones safe? Researchers still uncertain"

  • It's funny how big-city users forget that MOST of the country does not even have 3G yet. Here in North Carolina, there is no 3G available west of Charlotte. I live in the Asheville area, which still has no 3G service. AT&T twice dropped a call coming in to work on I-40 the other day. Once you get off the interstate highway, you never know whether you will even have service or not. I've had Verizon service here, and while it wasn't perfect, the coverage was much better. I'm told that AT&T just has fewer cell towers, and that's the problem. In reply to: "Is AT&T losing its grip on the iPhone?"

  • Surprising that you didn't mention the rumor that a new iPhone will be released on July 17. In reply to: "A bonanza of AT&T smartphone rumors"

  • Looks like they can't even take a picture of it without glare on the screen. I'll stick with anti-glare screens. In reply to: "Slim Asus Eee PC 1008HA, plus new 14- and 15-inch laptops, hitting U.S."

  • You are correct about ATRAC not being a good idea in hindsight, but how were they to know they would lose out to MP3 and even AAC? Going with AAC didn't hurt Apple. Of course they do offer the MP3 format as an option. After ripping everything I own in MP3 at 256, I went back and ripped it all again in AAC, which has better sound at any given bit rate. I'm happy with AAC because of the higher sound quality. I think that MP3, AAC and WMA are all here to stay, so there appear to be three winners and one loser--Sony, which went with ATRAC.
