  • "500MB of data transferred in 4.4 seconds with USB 3.0 compared to 4.4 seconds with USB 2.0."
Presumably, one of those times is wrong... In reply to: "Will Intel and USB make fiber optics mainstream?"

  • Dave: You're spot on about extrapolating data, but I think you've missed the point about computer game addiction (although whether "addiction" is the correct word is a separate issue, the debate amongst psychologists is continuing). To dismiss the risk as "ridiculous" and suggest that "parents can turn off or simply take the games out of the kids hands" shows a complete lack of understanding of the problem. I have known kids to sneak into their parents' bedroom at night and steal their own laptop so they can continue gaming into the wee hours of the morning. There are kids who miss school due to gaming. There are families breaking apart over this. Pandemic? Perhaps over the top, but since I haven't seen the stats, I don't know. I do know that this is a real issue that does need to be spoken about and addressed publicly. All credit to the Youth Care Foundation for raising awareness.

Note: I do not think that gaming is intrinsically harmful, in the same way I do not think that alcohol (for example) is intrinsically harmful. Gaming, however, can cause great harm if misused over time. In reply to: "Swedish group calls gaming addiction a 'pandemic' threat"

  • Virtual PC free?
Not for macs - not everyone has an Intel Mac...

But, to return to topic, Mac users can use Safari. In reply to: "Update: Browzar leaves tracks after all"

  • Apple Australia Recall
Instructions from the Apple Australia site (now that it finally
recognises the battery serial number): Discharge battery by
running computer on battery power for 4 hours or more until it
sleeps (but do not leave it unattended!). Take old battery to a
dealer (but it's up to us to provide proof that the battery is
approved for replacement). Wait up to *6 weeks(!)* for
replacement. There's no mention of what happens then,
presumably we have to go back and collect it.

And the utility of a latop computer without a battery is?
    Multiplied by 6 weeks?

Maybe Apple thinks all Australians are criminals and thus we
can't be trusted to return our old batteries in the post like the
    rest of the world can...

I love Apple computers, I hate Apple (Australia) customer
service. Well, I would hate it if we had any. In reply to: "Apple recall site had trouble with battery serial numbers"
