BMW's planning on using consumers as guinea pigs? Like GM did with its EV-1? Ooh, what fun...
Why is Fiat--through their "Chrysler" group--showing something that they're not even going to sell? Smoke and mirrors? Make politickos happy?
The CR-Z Hybrid seems pointless. Who's going to buy this? Original Insight owners? Wow, there were certainly a lot of those, weren't there? The ricer crowd may fall all over themselves over having a new platform to build on, but I can't seem any of them being SMART enough to actually develop the electric side of the power. More likely, they'll just pull the powerplants and try to shoehorn in a heavily worked over K20A2 from a stripped RSX Type S that just "happened" to fall in their collective laps to make this car a real worthy offspring of the CR-X.

It's no surprise that box office number were great for 2009, even factoring in higher ticket prices: it's cheap entertainment, relatively speaking. No professional sporting event is this cheap. No live concert is this affordable. And forget about how expensive those vacations you had to put a hold on really are. For a couple of hours, you can get away from it all, for not a lot of dough. That's EXACTLY why movies have done so well. And once you've seen the movie in the theater, why bother tossing even more cash by buying it on disc?
Given the economy this past year, going to the movies still represents a bargain form of entertainment, as long as you can stay away from the concession stand and don't have to pay for parking. And movies still holds the escapism title; for a few hours getting you out of that house with that monster mortgage and even heftier secondary equity load. Waiting for the DVD/BD disc to come out before you can get your entertainment doesn't distract ANYONE from their money woes, or worrying that their job is going to China.

The excitement factor around here is actually intolerable. I can hardly wait to buy this thing. I'm so amped that I can hardly control my bodily functions. This is the greatest news EVER.
Or not.
I think I'll just wait for my G1 contract to expire, then explore my options (yawn)...

The R35 GT-R was an '08 intro car. And I seem to remember CNET editor Brian Cooley griping about how harsh the ride was for public roads. Can't upset Cooley's kidneys and rump and expect to get props at the same time... In reply to: "Vote for the 2009 Tech Car of the Year"

Toyota's REAL problem is that there IS a way to shut down their cars equipped with these stupid start buttons...only that they didn't bother to tell owners about it, either in the cars OR in the owner's manuals. All anyone has to do is hold down the start button for three seconds, a bit like the power off for an iPod or other MP3 player, and the engine shuts off. But it's USELESS if Toyota doesn't TELL ANYONE about it.
BTW, the official NHTSA report of the CHiP officer's crash was that IT WAS the floor mats that jammed the gas pedal, not a software glitch. Also the reported cited the gas pedal's rigid design as a contributing factor as well as the lack of a retaining system that could have kept the floor mat away from the accelerator pedal to begin with.

Tata Nano...that car actually scares me. Even as its claims to 'green' are proving true, its initial low cost puts it within reach of vast multitudes of people that wouldn't otherwise have a car...and burning ANY gasoline. If Tata ends up selling millions of these things and actually puts MORE cars on the road, then where is the 'green' in that? In reply to: "Vote for the 2009 Tech Car of the Year"

Much of what made Saab a Saab was seriously watered down during the GM years. Too much cross platform sharing technological development made for models that became increasingly generic, not the sort of thing when you're attempting to sell in the near lux segment against the likes of Audi, BMW, Benz...not to mention the likes of Lexus, Infiniti and Acura. Saab as a maker was always something of a niche player, but the homogenizing of the brand that GM took Saab through, including the badge engineering of GMC and Subaru products as Saabs, was enough to alienate even the most fervent Saab devotee and erode what support there was among the faithful for Saab's traditional niche.
GM never understood Saab. GM never knew what to do with Saab. In their breakneck flurry to increase their product portfolio they bought a company that they had no business even contemplating to buy, never mind actually buying. Although Saab was a part of GM prior to Rick Wagoner taking over the CEO position of GM, he and his staff were simply incapable of positioning Saab into a viable and strong corner within GM's strategic product plans. Not that Saab could've survived all of this had they remained independent, but under the inept handling of GM's policy planning and marketing mavens they really never stood a chance.
