I'm glad there's competition in this space, but it doesn't look like B&N is competing with Amazon on the price of the media.
If I'm buying digital content, I want to be able to re-read it for years to come, and have flexibility regarding the devices. I sort-of trust Amazon on this, I think they get it. Rather than have shelves of books, I essentially have an online book shelf.
If my trust is broken, my titles disappear, I can't re-download them, etc, then this model is *broken* for me. It will be a long time before I get suckered down this path again.
I hope to enjoy using the Apple Tablet with Kindle App next winter. Listening to itunes on the device while reading a book.

I think I'm a reasonably intelligent person, here's what I simply do not understand:
If I have a PC properly licensed with XP, and I want to upgrade to Windows 7, then I have to do a clean installation. I have heard some talk that you have to start this upgrade process with the activated XP license present and then the upgrade will commence, wiping your drive, etc.
Well, what happens if two years from now I need to replace my hard drive. Do I have to reinstall XP again, activate it, and then upgrade it???
And if not, if I can zero out my hard drive, pop in the upgrade Win 7 disc, and then install the OS, then what exactly is the "functional difference" between the "upgrade" and "full" Win 7 discs? There's obviously a legal license difference, but I'm asking about the functional difference. I see none.
What a way to screw up a roll out with such terrible corporate communication to customers. Using a blog of all things to patronize people... "it's time to have that conversation again...."

@powerman99
Bless you for this one. Why they couldn't have provdied both options is beyond me. I don't know why anyone wouldn't want Pro since you never know if you'll need that additional network functionality some day.

"The Wii browser, based on Opera, was previously available as a free download to early adapters who installed it between April and June of 2007."
That's early "adopters." LOL

This article should be filed under Old Fogeys trying to adapt to life in the 21st Century...
Slow news day. Maybe something new with Michael Jackson you can report?

I have an AT&T family plan. I bought 2 of the original iPhones. Last July, I dutifully upgraded hardware of both of them to the 3G (at the same time). Now, AT&T is offering me the $299 price on a 32GB 3G S for one phone while I would have to pay $499 for the other 32GB 3G S--until December. I called AT&T and they said the preference was handed out based on revenue generation. In other words, the core account on the family plan generates sufficient revenue, while the other does not. What nonsense.
Considering that AT&T has had crappy reception for me for years, and I live in Montgomery County MD (suburb of DC) in a heavily populated area (Mid County Highway and Woodfield Rd). (Tmobile, Sprint, and Verizon have fine reception) The only thing keeping me on AT&T is the iPhone. This upgrade inconsistency essentially guarantees that I will wait for Verizon to get the iPhone.

I have 2 iPhone 3Gs on a family plan. They were purchased at the same time. Yet I'm eligible to upgrade one at the upgrade rate now, but for the other I would have to wait for December.
I tell you, having bought 4 iPhones now from AT&T, with their crappy network which has has no service near my home (in a DC suburb) for years, I'm going to wait until Verizon carries it.
