The fact that Gamecube was pretty damned close to the Xbox (which you list in your modern console set) and the Wii is more powerful than the Gamecube (let's say 1.5 gamecubes) is pretty revealing.
If you can say that Xbox makes you a modern console veteran, then you've sort of invalidated your whole Wii premise in your first sentence. You're right about some of the games being visually not much better than N64 games. And I wish that there were more games that matched the N64's core gaming library (goldeneye, Turok, Perfect Dark, Sin and Punishment, et al.) but to ignore the games coming up for the Wii with improved graphics is mindless. The fact that a smaller company like High Voltage Software can put out decent visuals on a game like the Conduit is pretty telling that the rest of the industry just is lazy when it comes to the Wii. They want to make a quick buck with non-creative minigame-fests. They say that they need more power when it comes to making good games.
It probably speaks volumes to the state of software engineers these days. Many of whom do some design and run code through an IDE without any real spirit of stretching the code and the system. Probably because there aren't many developers with the hacker spirit.
The Wii can do graphics at a level worthy of Xbox titles. Hell the Gamecube was able to come close except for some lighting here and there (when you compare Splinter Cell 1 versions). But that alone isn't enough (when you look at Sonic and The Black Knight it's obvious that pretty graphics alone aren't enough).
The worm is turning, it's taken a few years but developers are starting to step up and do some real work for the Wii. It's gotta be demoralizing for whatever team is doing the work to keep throwing out crap minigame fests (most of which also fail in sales...only the best branded ones really make it).
I love my 360 and the PS3 is a gorgeous piece of equipment...but I'm really excited for the upcoming Wii titles over the next 18 months from Tiger Woods 2010 to Silent Hill...Tatsunoko Vs Capcom to No More Heroes 2 and Red Steel 2 to Metroid: Other M.

Pretty much, huh? Well, at least these guys have been working with PC Devs way in advance and that will allow folks to enjoy this device on some really good existing games. It would've been great if WiiMotion Plus wasn't developed so reactively. It would've been nice to play WiiSports with Wiimotion+, not to mention No More Heroes or Star Wars The Force Unleased (lord knows Red Steel could've used it!). "But Zampella said that Infinity Ward decided not to make the game for that console because "it just doesn't fit on the Wii. We thought it would be compromised to be on (that) platform."
Ha! So this is funny! It wouldn't fit on the Wii, but they felt just fine doing a reduced version for the DS! Oh and this does not bode well for the upcoming COD5 - it is currently slated for the Wii! If 5 can fit on the Wii then, I guess Treyarch is not doing anything near as good as COD5...if what the PR Pnhead for Activision said is true. :)
(Hmmm, too lazy to get move closer to the screen and check my spelling...but I see alot of red underlines! Oh well...submit!

My response to 3rd party developers?
Make good games! The remake of Resident Evil 4 on the Wii sold nearly 800,000 copies on the Wii.
Madden 08 made it onto the sales list in spite of its crappy online support initially and the lack of modes on the Wii.
I WOULD point to the DS for a history lesson in fads, but that's just pointless.
That being said, the 360 has a huge library of cool games, and lots of 3rd-parties putting effort into games.
I think that developers should think before jumping to suport the Wii. If you're going to support it, how much effort do you have to put into making a quality title? Do you want to support casual games only? Is there enough reason to make a game for the core gamers? Are you willing to put quality online features into the games? Will putting serious effort into Wii games, and competing against Nintendo 1st and 2nd party development teams still make it worthwhile to support the Wii?
They should be worried. If the Wii keeps selling as it is now, eventually...a good number of those buying will be core gamers. Remember, at least 500,000 to 700,000 people bought a 3rd-party remake of a Gamecube/PS2 game (without online or updated graphics) that was a hard-core game...on the Wii.
If the Wii's sales are at 20,000,000 this time next year, you might have at least 1 million people willing to buy such a third party hard core game.
Just sort of hard to ignore the system sales as an indicator of success.

Agree 100%
Losing Squaresoft was during the N64 days was one of the biggest triggers for Nintendo's decline during the mid-90s until...well...last Fall.
If Sony loses SquareEnix, there won't likely be a boatload of top-tier developers waiting to take their place.
