  • IMHO, tech students, look into MDSNAA for the free copy instead: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/academic/dd861349.aspx

Any other student should read the fine print that goes along with this deal.
MS' terms say they're not responsible for anything on 3rd party site & ordering means going thru Digitalriver.com
    http://www.bbb.org/minnesota/business-reviews/internet-shopping-services/digital-river-in-eden-prairie-mn-38000919

You CAN be asked to verify you are enrolled - and if you can't, they will charge you the difference up to the FULL price.

Yeah, Pro can be ordered using the "Need to join your school's domain?" link on the order page, but either way this is a download - If you want a copy ON DISC, they hit you up for $13 more. In reply to: "Microsoft to offer cheap Windows 7 for students"

  • In contrast to Lt.ColeVADF, I just started using Comodo on my WinXP sp2 machine without any problems.
I'd used Zone Alarm until the recent update. I received the normal "update available" message and accepted the immediate install. Zone Alarm refused to work from that point on.
I spent a day cleaning it out of WinXP. I discovered a normal uninstall doesn't do it. According to ZA's forum I had to boot into Safe Mode, add a parameter to the untinstall icon's command, then search/delete certain files on the hard driver & THEN... Edit the registry!
I even tried reinstalling the app 2x before looking for an alternative... Oh, I also tried System Restore to get back to config before the update... Didn't help. ZoneAlarm still would no longer function. In reply to: "Comodo comes back with version 3--how does it hold up?"

  • I'll have to reserve final judgment until I actually see the picture quality in-person...
That said, I have yet to see an HDTV, lacking 120Hz processing that handles "judder" (particularly during fast motion scenes) well enough for me to invest the money.

For energy efficiency, deep black levels (1,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio!) and smooth motion it sounds like OLED TVs may be the way to go... Hmmm, how long until they're affordable, I wonder! ;-) In reply to: "Philips' Eco TV sips power, saves rainforest"
