  • The world's largest democracy should embrace democracy in software development. Open source offers that. In reply to: "Obama wants to know: Why open source?"

  • I get the contractor thing...but I think the better target audience is the road warrior salesperson. They generally have to log in and respond to email, update salesforce, etc. a lot more...and they are most likely NOT going to be driving a truck. If this is the innovation Ford is looking for to dig themselves out of their financial woes...I worry for them. In reply to: "Ford trucks getting LogMeIn remote PC access"

  • Yes, there are keyboard shortcuts for GMail, but the point is that there are already a set of keyboard shortcuts that have become the standard over the years. GMail reinvented email...but it wasn't necessary to reinvent the keyboard shortcuts. Delete key should still delete (not x). Similarly, ctrl+enter should send (not tab enter). Google didn't need to be novel in this regard. I've finally gotten used to the new paradigm that GMail establishes, but I HATE having to shift and enter to send an email. Yahoo mail did a better job of following the establishes conventions of offline mail clients. In reply to: "5 little Gmail annoyances Google needs to fix"

  • I like the fact that Chrome is pushing the need for speed in web browsing and to that end I see the project as a necessary evil. I do view it as a necessary evil, however, because there is no way in hell that we (web developers) need to be designing for so many different web clients / rendering engines. Yes, WebKit is used by others than chrome (Safari and many open source browsers) but bringing more people into the WebKit camp gives greater parity to three wholly different rendering engines. If there were no Internet Explorer then I would say yes, by all means, WebKit and Gecko all the way. Two is a reasonable number to develop for an both are rather standards compliant. However, we developers have to hack a bit to accommodate IE and so we're rather sensitive to any need to program for a third, even if it is rather standards compliant.

Rather than develop on WebKit, I would much rather see Google (and others) throw their weight behind Mozilla and Gecko. Despite what I consider to be a vastly superior product to IE, IE still maintains dominance on the web. We need all the help we can get evangelizing Firefox. What's worst of all is that though Microsoft has made strides with IE8 in becoming more standards compliant, a large number of people STILL use IE 6 and IE 5! I'm getting off on a tangent, but the point is this...we do not need yet another browser. In reply to: "Why I switched from Firefox to Chrome"

  • I have to chime in that this is pretty standard authentication and not that burdensome. My Chase.com account (where I check my credit card balance and pay my bill) uses this same method for authorizing access every so often. It's annoying, but it adds a very valuable level of authentication that's pretty low-tech and easy to implement.

The other benefit here is that if they're not paying attention to MAC address, you should be able to take this confirmation code and use it on your laptop, so you can surf with any device...not just iPhone. In reply to: "Rant: AT&T iPhone Wi-Fi free as in money, but not as in time"

  • Is it clear that a company that offers a product like this is allowed to use the YouTube player in this way?

    http://code.google.com/apis/youtube/terms.html

Check out section III part 4 (Commercial Use). I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to advertise on, in or even around YouTube content unless there's other content on the page of enough value to warrant the ad. Said another way, YouTube content can't be the chief asset on a page that you're selling ads against. In reply to: "New media player searches for spoken words in videos"

  • Our primary clients have been newspapers and they have been economically hurting for awhile, so in a way, my company is feeling pretty comfortable. We're used to talking to stressed out companies anxiously looking for ways to reduce costs and increase revenues. The biggest fear we have is that companies will see any 3rd party service as an expense and not treat them with a holistic view. If a company can take a third party service and actually do an ROI on it and realize the service is MAKING them money, then that's great. But I fear many companies (especially newer ones) won't even bother doing an ROI and will just cut services for the sake of making their budgets look good on paper.
