"DirectX is not required for gaming (far from it, in fact... most FPS games, even today, use OpenGL libraries for ease of cross-platform coding, the lack of confiscatory licensing fees from Microsoft, etc). The proof of this? Vista was the only platform you could get DX 10 for, yet the Windows gaming community clung to XP like it were a liferaft."
Seriously? OpenGL is and has been as good as dead for gaming for a very long time. Sure, some vertical grpahics apps use it but DirectX is _THE_ API for gaming, period, and that's not changing any time soon. And for the record, DirectX 10 was one the primary reasons gamers moved to Vista when it first shipped, and those that stayed with XP were running games under DirectX 9, not OpenGL.

Internet radio will kill satellite radio, no doubt about it. When you can get Pandora in your car and all the free Podcast commentary you can download why would you ever pay $12 or $15 a month for music you can't even keep? Give me 10 free downloads a month (ala the Zune Pass) and you got a deal. In reply to: "Don't let losses fool you: Sirius XM has promise"

The fact is that the vast majority of conservation dollars comes directly from hunters and fishers. I sure hope everyone in favor of this kind of nonsense is 100% pure vegan, otherwise you're just being hypocritical. Either that or you only like protecting the cute animals. They're just stubbornly clinging to their old fashioned ideas of yesteryear. They said VHS tape would kill the movie industry too and it obviously didn't but the MPAA doesn't seem to learn from their mistakes. In fact, there's no way I'll even start buying Blu-Ray anything until I can make a backup and encode it on my computer. The irony is that this DRM junk is preventing a lot of people from buying media in the first place but they just can't get that through their heads. "Many of Apple's ads are nothing more than simple product demonstrations. Beautifully executed, celebrating their own simplicity, with often superbly-chosen music. But still simple product demonstrations. "
That was a confusing comment. The only Apple ads I remember seeing were merely anti-Windows FUD spreading dishonest and misleading information. Apple has the reputation is does not because of advertising but because of selective pricing and a religious following that insists it's products are perfect and superior in every way. For normal peope it's like listening to your metro brother-in-law go on and on about his latest Gucci watch when all you want is to know when soccer practice is. And the higher Apple prices their products the more alluring they become, after all, you get what you pay for, right? And you're special so you deserve it. Personally I'm glad Microsoft finally decided to inject a does of reality into the conversation, I'm just curious why they let Apple run free with their nonsense for so long before finally doing something.

While tech hasn't "ruined" our children, it has definitely adversely affected their lives as well as the lives of adults. Sure, it's a choise we made consciously but that doesn't diminish it's impact.
30 years ago neighbors had block parties, bridge clubs, belonged to the local swim club, and kids played outside with their friends. Why? There was nothing to do at home. No cable TV, no movies, no computer games, no Internet, etc. Sure they had no choice but it was a lifestyle that had distinct benefits.
Today people live next door to each other for 10 years and never speak. Kids stay inside playing XBOX and watching MTV. More and more feel completely isolated and alone even though they're surrounded by milions of people. Why? Because everyone cocoons today.
Is it ultimately their choice? Sure, but we don't always choose what is best for us. See McDonalds, cigarettes, dope, etc. I'm not necessarily advocating a return to the pre-tech days of the 50s as there are surely benefits as well, but to think there isn't a downside too is being naive. It's like an alcoholic who drinks a fifth a day - sure it makes you feel better now but ultimately it's killing you on the inside.

Carefull with that BMW analogy. After having bought one new I'd take a Chevy any day. But hey, you sure look cool driving it, right?
