Comments on: The 404 256: Where we celebrate good juju, bad juju

Our third day broadcasting live from the CNET stage at CES 2009 is definitely when we get back into the nasty groove.

+1 on proofreading... somebody needs to fix this headline quickly. Whoever wrote that headline is an illiterate idiot.

All typos aside, this episode brings back the true sexiness of the 404.

wow - can you be any more ignorant/offensive? *** are you guys doing here?

"CNETatCES: The 404 256: Where we celebrate good jew jew bad jew jew http://tinyurl.com/7b3ole"

that's just plain wrong. you say you "fixed" it over an hour ago, but it is still posted like that.

just despicable.

Glad the title was fixed-

This ain't gawker, where some "too cool" editor can make a self-conscious anti-Semitic joke to shock the goyim.

This egregious "error" is still in the Twitter Feed on the side. Had you written 'jyjy', that would be an understandable mistake as the 'y' is next to 'u'. How do you accidentally write the word "jew" four times in a headline without realizing it might be considered offensive?

How could "jew jew" be offensive??? You listen to this show, right? Isn't this show offensive almost every episode, if not EVERY episode? Also remember Jeff Bakalar is jewish and you actually listened to the episode, he stated that. If you get offended by just the title, let alone the content of the show, then this is not the show for you.

Totally not offensive! Dear 'pharmd', 'ka5ysy', 'rebelraptor', 'Francis_Burdett', and 'Jazsax' : get a life, stop being such sensitive *******. Im Jewish, a 404 fan, and -gasp- a girl, and I'm not offended by the title or any of the content of the 404. These guys are brilliant. Justin already apologized for the mistake and you guys keep whining. Get out of your mom's basement for a couple of hours and grow up.

Dear TechGrrrrrrrrrl and Co.

1. you don't have to be jewish to be offended, but good for you; 2. if CNET is claiming it was in fact a mistake, then they are really admitting that it should NOT have been posted as it were and that it is tasteless; if they hadn't called it a "mistake" then there was no need to apologize or call attention to it if it was indeed the "humorous/witty" headline they were going for; 3. its great that women read tech blogs...but how is that relevant here - oh wait, its not; and 4. 404 fan or not, jewish writer or not, it seems pretty weak for a major online publication to use someone's religious/race/sex (jokingly) to pull hits, esp when it has nothing to do with the story...

cheers!

Hope MTV doesn't tell daddy Viacom about what you said. LOL

Loved the story about the BMW jacking.. and uh.. when can we expect to enter the contest for the AMD giveaway? LOL

Meh, last comment for me. @rebelraptor: Justin did the right thing by admitting it was a mistake because he indeed meant "ju ju". Now, whether you accept the apology or not, no one cares. As for the quote -- "it seems pretty weak for a major online publication to use someone's religious/race/sex (jokingly)" -- you obviously have NEVER heard this podcast... Even today's episode contains that sort of content. I guarantee you, go to any episode of the 404 and you will hear each one of those. Hell, call their Voicemail box: 1-866-404-CNET. Listen to the recording.

okay, here's the story for you, hopefully it will clear everything up, whether you choose to believe it or not i guess is up to you, but this is what happened and anyone at the live show will tell you the same story.

we asked the live audience for suggestions on what to name the show; we explained the title format "this is the show where _____," but the audience had no clue what to say until all of a sudden a woman yelled out "Good juju bad juju!" none of us had ANY IDEA what that meant. maybe a reference to "sit bubu sit, good dog?" Or maybe jujubees? seriously, none of us knew but we used it anyway and we always write it in our Google Doc spreadsheet, so I just sounded out the onomatopoeia and wrote it in as "good jewjew, bad jewjew." obviously, as stated before, we never thought it was genuinely a religious slur. even now, we still don't know what it means. i suppose i could've written joojoo, or juju, or ghooghoo, or jhujhu, but we were in a rush to start and i just wrote that in. if you listen to the show, you'll hear our confusion in the beginning about the show title. anyway, i can only speak for myself (and not cbs, wilson, or jeff), but i'm sorry people got the wrong idea or were offended by the title. yes, this show is pretty vulgar, but we'd never EVER intentionally hurt people's feelings.

hopefully we can all move on and continue laughing? cool!

love,

justin

Justin, thanks for being patient with the shriekers... but seriously, I am appalled that you wrote "Sit BUBU, sit"! It's UBU! I'm sure you didn't mean to offend poor Ubu, confusing him with that idiot pal of Yogi Bear. What were you thinking?! Still want those Trek DVDs, btw...

Changing the title messed up the feed in itunes. I hate it when I have to download the show through the web and play it as a song with my ipod. >:-(

get the hell over it, people.
if this is the first offensive jew-related thing you've seen, you've sure as hell not been on the internet for very long.

isn't jeff jewish and talks about it on the air? maybe if you guys actually have watched the show before this wouldn't have been such a big issue AND it wasn't intentional.

stop actively looking to be offended. in fact, this show could use less viewers like you.

About CES

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the world's largest consumer electronics trade show. CES 2009 is scheduled for January 8 through 11 in Las Vegas, and it will feature thousands of exhibitors showcasing their latest tech products. CNET's team of reporters and reviewers will be at the show, covering technology's heavy hitters and previewing thousands of products before they are released to the public.

Each year, CNET, in partnership with the Consumer Electronics Association, produces the Best of CES awards at the International Consumer Electronics Show. The CNET editorial team recognizes the best new products at the show with awards in 10 categories, an overall Best of Show award, and the People's Voice award, which is selected by CNET's online audience.
