A sleeker style and smaller form factor and this could catch on

yes , this nice & cute thing.
$700 is still cheaper than a round trip from US to Vietnam , and I can talk everyday with my wife 10,000 miles apart.
I just wonder it will work with Yahoo message or not .

A lot cheaper than those polycom systems..... is there Wi-fi as well? I'll be pretty impressed with this if I can do a inperson conference at starbucks??

Yes. Yes. AND price.

My brother in law bought his aunt a 2nd hand laptop for 150$, slapped on a Linux distro and bought a USB webcam to run Skype.

My question is: how is this better than a laptop?

Not on price.
Not on size.
Not on functionality.
Im not even going to into the whole Creative servers questions.

You can get an EEE to run Skype, so I dont see this working unless they drastically reduce its footprint. Someting that folds into a form factor of a cordless handset or answering machine and is in the $199-$299 (different options)

Abandon the whole server thing and just make it compatible to run Skype and IM's like Yahoo, AIM, MSN, ICQ, create a Trillian like interface and make it THE box where you can do ALL your video and chat.

Actually, I think they may be looking at a simpler target. Did your friend ship the stuff to his aunt, say plug it in and have it work by simply dialing the number? My impression is that they are targeting non-techies. Yes, if you are already comfortable setting up a webcam, then this may not be that relevant. The one other use I see is for doing video-conference on the go. Yes, I've seen one with wi-fi. I would expect the throughput at Starbuck's might limit the quality of the video...
