LED-backlit LCDs are certainly winning the hype war at CES 2009, but home theater buffs know that plasma TVs often offer better performance for your dollar. Samsung's new top-of-the-line plasmas, the PNB850 series, feature a superslim, inch-thick design and offer the new Internet widgets available via the Internet@TV platform. Here are the important details.

Key features of the Samsung PNB850 series:

  • Slim design, about an inch thick
  • Ultra FilterBright Plus antiglare screen
  • Real Movie (24 frames per second) mode
  • Wide color Enhancer Pro
  • Built-in Ethernet
  • Wi-Fi-ready, with purchase of additional adapter
  • Energy Star 3.0 compatible

Pricing and availability of the Samsung PNB850 series (estimated street prices):

While we usually see manufacturers print misleading, inflated contrast ratios, Samsung instead only claims "mega dynamic contrast ratio" for these plasmas. The Ultra FilterBright Plus screen is the latest iteration of Samsung's glare reduction coatings, with these sets adding black stripes into the panel to absorb more room light and create deeper blacks. We're anxious to see this in action, as screen glare is still often a problem with plasmas. Wide Color Enhancer Pro is a feature that supposedly matches a source's color space to the HD color space--we haven't seen a feature like this yet, so it will be interesting to test in the labs.

A built-in Ethernet connection enables access to Samsung's new Internet@TV platform, which lets users access Yahoo widgets capable of delivering content from services such as Flickr, Yahoo News, Yahoo Weather, USA Today, YouTube, Showtime, and others. The PNB850 series is also Wi-Fi-ready, but you'll need to purchase an additional adapter. Finally, the sets are compliant with the new Energy Star 3.0 specification, although it seems like almost all 2009 HDTVs are.

The following products mentioned are available.

I think its great that flat panel tv's are getting slimmer, however I still have to have a cable box that's 18" deep under the tv. I will be glad to see a 2 way cable card for these "slim" tv's.

That is one good looking screen! I love the minimalist design. The Internet access sounds more like a gimmick than a feature though. If you are the type of person who cares about "widgets" such as weather and news on your television, you probably already have a Wii, Xbox 360, or home theater PC in your living room. If you don't have one of those things hooked up to your TV by now, you probably don't care enough to ever set it up even if your TV can do it.

I have the 2008 plasma Samsung with internet, and I got to admit it is a nice feature to have. Yes, the Wii, computer, ipod, etc all can tell me the weather, but if I'm sitting down relaxing watching tv or a movie and about to leave, it's nice to have one touch access to weather instead of having to change input to the Wii or get up to get the iPod.. It's not a selling point for me, but it's nice to have.

I agree with toby773. A 2 way cable card will go a long way in these new sets.

Will it offer the Netflix streaming ability like the blu ray players?

Dang, I just purchased a 2008 Model Samsung 46" LED LCD and, while a beautiful set, am secretly wishing I could have waited for one of these 2009 PDP's by Samsung. The slim design absolutely stunning and being a movie buff - my LCD admittedly does not measure up to PDP picture quality for my current collection of DVD's.. Still happy but I know a PDP purchase is in my future..
