Not much in the way of ports on the 370T, but still four cores for $249.

Someone has to explain to me just HOW they can get this to $249? Kindle Fire is sold at a loss and money is made back from Amazon ecosystem tied into the Fire...

I'm not complaining, if it's good i want it. Right the f*** now :D

Because the new Tegra 3 chip will be same price as Tegra 2 last year and Tegra 2 chip will fall in price. Also, Amazon is not selling at a lose. The experts did breakdown and the production cost is below $199. So there's good margin to be had even at $249...also remember the part costs of the screen fell since last year...so this thing may even be cheaper to produce than the Kindle at it's launch...

If you listen to Jensen Huang's keynote, he mentioned about a technology in Tegra 3 called "Direct Touch", which allows the manufacturers to remove some of the components and thus reduce the BOM cost.

Neither the Kindle Fire nor this new ASUS tablet will be sold below profitability. The official PR from these companies is always going to be slightly different from the reality. The costs to make these tablets have been economized because the market has become so huge for them, prices have dropped, and not to mention how cheap the labor is to build these things. Have you heard the working conditions reported by FOXCONN (who makes the iPhone 4S), Quanta, and some of these other Asian based high tech manufacturing firms? They are paying workers minimum amounts, no benefits, and many times hiring underage workers that are demanded to work many 12 hour shifts to pump out these products. Add in the suppressed Chinese Yuan, bam. There ya go!

When you realize what the production chain looks like, it is easy to see how these things are dirt cheap.

Awesome I can't wait I kind of liked the prime but this is much cheaper and if it performs up to par with the Prime then why would I want the prime?
Posted by LOL247 (13 comments )

cause the prime can connect to a dock for a tablet/notebook experience
Posted by techguylikeaboss12 (14 comments )

Plus, the Prime is twice as large.

And the dock extends the battery life by a lot.

Poor Amazon and B&N. If this price point stands and it hits the US, it's basically game over for the Fire and Nook Tablet. Not complaining about the competition, but still sucks for them.

I totally disagree - even if the ASUS tablet is much better technologically-speaking, Amazon and to a lesser degree Barnes & Noble have much greater name recognition with the casual users who will be the target audience for the 7" ASUS tablet. Additionally, both Amazon and Barnes & Noble have well-developed ecosystems on their tablets that make them easy to use, or at least easier than a standard Android tablet. Again, this is an important factor for the casual users.

Though I think it is good that ASUS is bringing a high-end 7" tablet to the market, I wonder if this effort will blow up in their faces due to the 900 lb gorilla known as Amazon.

no...the asus units don't have the contents...they only make the money on hardware. Amazon and Bn can slash prices and still recover later with content sales. They'll be fine...

Totally disagree here. Unless ASUS kicks up an ad campaign and ensures their products are represented well by retailers to ensure they are being sold fairly, it might then have a dent on Amazon and B&N. Which by the way, both of them can recover through the purchase of content in their virtual stores. That is why the 3DS is still able to make a profit because if Nintendo sold it for hardware only, they would be bankrupt now. Selling games for $30-$40 a piece with smaller purchases in the eShop make up for the subsidy. This is the hard part of being an OEM. You can only make cash on the hardware while others like Apple and Amazon can afford to sell their products at a lost knowing they will be able to make that up in the purchase of books, apps, music, and other digital content. (Hypothetically of course, we know Apple will never sell the iPad at a loss)

Agree the CHIP. Your average tablet shopper has no awareness of the Asus tablet lineup.

On the other hand, they know what an iPad is and have heard of the Kindle Fire and Nook. Maybe they have heard of the Galaxy Tab.

They need to get some buzz going or else it will continue to be a non-entity in the mainstream tablet market. Outside of the Android geek world, no one cares about this tablet right now.

You have to remember Amazon's primary goal is to sell service not hardware. I'm sure they anticipated that sooner or later the other tablet makers are going to edge closer to the price of fire. I would expect fire's price to drop once amazon readys the next tablet.

The smartest android tablet manufacture by far goes to Asus. Now, thats something I and most will buy.
Good manufature + good product + good pricing = success!!

Smartest android tablet manufacturer? Wow!
Have you looked at the issues Asus has had with the Transformer Prime?
Delayed delivery and rollout.
64gb version in short/nearly zero supply.
WiFi connectivity weak due to aluminum case.
GPS connectivity nearly non-existent.
Asus removed "GPS" from their online spec sheet.
Debackle over locked/encrypted bootloader.
Go to ASuS North America on Facebook and look at all the disfavorable feedback they've been getting for the last month.

... and Asus is fixing those problems. I'm sure this tablet makes up for those flukes. This tablet is definitely a game changer.

What are the dimensions of it, then what is the screen resolution.
also how much does it weigh about? does it look good from most viewing angles?

BTW, if you feel up to it you could give us a touch more info.
It is a News website isn't this?

One thing I can get out of this article is that TABLET PRICES ARE DECREASING AND IS GOING TO DECREASE FOR A WHILE NOW so don't get too excited and pre-order 10 of these lol

edgar1283 agreed...

This definitely has my interest peaked. Apple surely has to offer the iPad 2 at $299 or less now once the iPad 3 hits. I was looking at getting a Nook Tablet, but I'm gonna wait and see how this new $249 Asus pans out, and the rest of the tablet market for that matter...

In all, I think the general masses/casual crowd should play it low while the tablet wars pan out. All it takes is the stroke on some failures and the success of one to cause a frenzy. With firesale TouchPads, 64GB PlayBooks practically paying for the hardware and over, and the efforts of Amazon with B&N, things are just rolling.

With every new product, there will be a monopoly for the first few months and then the inferiors come. After that, failures spark interest and then a success comes to change the game. Look at practically every piece of tech to come out. Remember the Atari 2600 (I wasn't alive then)? We had some knock-offs until some legitimate products came to shake the same tree.

Asus has really got there stuff together. I have had the Transformer Tablet (TF101) since august and its been great. Its tough, ASUS service is awesome and updates are quick. I heard ICS is coming for my transformer very soon.

Tough - left the table (without keyboard attached) on the top of my car, took off down the road and I hear something sliding off my roof... oops. Turn around and pick up the transformer laying facedown on wet asphalt. Snap the bezel back into place and bingo it works!! Bezels is scratched pretty bad but that is expected as it slide on the road! One small scratch on the screen.
Asus Service - My kid ripped the space bar off the keyboard. Sent it in for repair and they did it under warranty!
Will definately by ASUS again.

That's impressive, but I imagine quad core is going to be bad on battery life, however, the price will make me forget :)

However, without the advertising, this will just sit on the shelf.

Advertising, advertising, advertising!

@microsoftApplegoogle,"Advertising, advertising, advertising" or Cnet could give it a fair write up, instead of "just feels like a normal tablet". But then it hasnt got an Apple logo on it. Funny too, since CES started, Cnet's advertising iPhones, how appropriate, seeing Apple's not at CES. Anyway,I'm sure we're going to keep getting unbiased reviews.

You're not too familiar with tegra 3 then. If you were you would know that quad core tegra 3 has better battery life than dual core tegra 2s.

@BillWindows
What more can they say? If this had 8 Cores and a terabyte of ram, facebook, twitter, Angry Birds, Scrabble, and Google Maps still look and perform exactly the same on it.

@microsoftApplegoogle Read the specs of the Tegra 3 chipset and you'll see that it is most likely to use much less power than dual cores with similar specs currently in production.

Everyone should just kick back and see what's going to be offered in the next quarter or two. Barring natural disasters the prices will go down while the offerings get better.

Of course going with Asus is an easy decision as the do have great products and service from my experiences anyway.

I'm still suspicious that at this price it will be delivered with a contract and a monthly bill from a cell carrier.

Not likely as Asus started out as a hardware production company and still is, so they have the means to produce the components and sell them at a marginal profit without having to jack up the price because of a middleman company.

I for one am going to wait at least till after E3'12 that way i can grab a decent ics.2-3 tab and do a dual boot with win8 maybe an Android virtual machine will be out by then that way i can do seamless intergration

I would also like to see the tablet wars continue into 2013 and then start to die off towards the end of summer. Why? because at that point i expect a 10" tab to have Quad-Core 1.5Ghz cpu 2G ram 1.0Ghz dual-core gpu with 802.11ac and better bluetooth device support.

One downside to all the new stuff is that it freezes some buyers into inaction. A couple of commentators here have said as much. I think if you wait until things settle down you never will buy anything, it's such a dynamic situation right now. All the announcements are probably designed to freeze the market, as in "don't buy now, we have this awesome gadget coming out soon (really, we are, for sure, no lie) for practically free (okay, cheap, with a contract, but don't worry about that)!"

Tablet at $250 with Tegra 3 and 7" HD display works for me. I paid that for my Samsung Galaxy Nexus w/contract. 7" is just the right side for me on the road and the price point rocks!

Does Anyone else think that the tablet still looks an awful lot like a prototype? That caseback definitely does, as does the fit and finish of the ports relative to the case back (notice the giant gaps). Lastly The Giant ASUS logo on the front is very... Well... un-Asus-like.

I for one I'm VERY excited about this device. This would make for a wonderful companion to my Transformer Prime. I would not mind one bit travelling on the trains with this, giving it to my preschooler to play, or having it stolen (well maybe I'd mind that a little). The Prime on theother hand is Daddy's toy ONLY.

I can't wait to see what the final product looks like.

Now this is the tablet sweet spot! If it gets a Canadian release (or hell, even an American release that can ship to Canada), this would be a hell of a tablet for emulation, gaming, media, and comic reading; everything I want out of a tablet, all done (presumably) excellently, and not at a cost that's going to freak me out. Well played, Asus!
